Establishment: Kronotsky State Biosphere Reserve was created in 1934, and in 1996 was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. Since 2002 the zapovednik has received support through a joint project of the United Nations Development Program and the Global Environment Facility (UNDP/GEF), and from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
Size and Location: Kronotsky State Biosphere Reserve is located on the east coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula. The total area of the reserve is 1,142,134 hectares, including 135,000 hectares of protected marine aquatoria (a coastal zone 3 miles in width). Kronotsky Zapovednik is home to Kamchatka’s most famous landmark – the Valley of the Geysers.
