Kronotsky Zapovednik encompasses a very large territory; therefore weather conditions can be quite different in different parts of the reserve.
Winter is relatively long, beginning in the middle of November and going strong up through early April. However, winter is also fairly mild, with average temperatures around -9º С ; it is very rare for the temperature to drop even to -20º С . The coldest months are January and February, when prolonged blizzards with high winds and lots of snow are regular events. The ground is covered in snow several meters deep for about 200 days per year.
Spring is cool and fairly long, lingering from April to June. At the end of April average temperatures rise above the 0º С mark, but it takes another month for averages to rise another 5 degrees.
Summer begins in July and lasts only 2 ½ months. August is the warmest time of the year, when average temperatures are +12-13º С , and can reach as high as +25º С . Winds are calm, but rain and fog are frequent guests.
Fall begins in the second half of September and brings warm and dry weather. The average temperature in October is +4-5º С . In the middle of November fall turns to winter, often very abruptly.
